John Henry Lanchester (born 25 Feb 1962) is a British journalist and novelist. He was born in Hamburg, brought up in Hong Kong and educated in England; between 1972 and 1980 at Gresham's School in Holt, Norfolk, then at St John's College, Oxford. He is married to historian and author Miranda Carter. He has written four novels, The Debt to Pleasure (which won the Whitbread First Novel Award), Mr Phillips, Fragrant Harbour and Capital. Two works of non-fiction: Family Romance, a memoir; and Whoops!: Why everyone owes everyone and no one can pay, a book about the global financial crisis.
