Russell Conwell Hoban (Feb 4, 1925 – Dec 13, 2011) was an American expatriate writer. His works span many genres, including fantasy, science fiction, mainstream fiction, magical realism, poetry, and children's books. Among Hoban recognition includes; How Tom Beat Captain Najork and His Hired Sportsmen (1974), a picture book written by Hoban, shared the annual Whitbread Award for Children's Books. Riddley Walker won the 1982 John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel, juried recognition of the year's best SF novel published in English, and the "Best International Novel" prize at the 1983 Australian SF Convention.
