Arcadio Polanco, a native of Panama and resident alien, turns 19 and soon afterwards receives a draft notice. When he fails a written test for the U.S. Navy, Polanco is informed by a U.S. Army recruiter that, if he enlists for three years, he would be guaranteed U.S. citizenship.  Thus, Polanco enlists in the Army.  But he is not granted the citizenship as promised.  Later, he receives orders for Vietnam while awaiting the citizenship process.  In Vietnam, Polanco is assigned to a MACV team and becomes embroiled in many battles in the brutal year of 1968.  He survives to return home and completes his three-year enlistment.  Polanco soon learns his most formidable battle will be his quest for American citizenship.
