A Golden Bond is the story of Angela Demetrious, the daughter of Greek immigrants. The tale begins during the 1950's in a sleepy Midwestern city. Angie is beginning her senior year of high school, but is already looking ahead to its end when she will have earned the right to wear a class ring. But Angie's life is thrown off-course with the recent and sudden death of her mother. The end of summer brings not only the beginning of Angie's senior year, but also the return of her father from Greece with Angie's new step-mother. Soon after her step-mother's arrival it becomes clear to Angie that she is now an outsider in her own home. Faced with an unloving step-mother and unsupportive father, Angie realizes that if she wants anything in life, she must get it herself. Her independence begins with the purchase of a class ring and, against her father's wishes, the pursuit of an education beyond high school.
