Raymond Oliver, an emeritus professor of English from Berkeley, specialized in Old and Middle English, verse translation, and the history of the short poem. He earned a PhD at Stanford, and studied poetry there on a Stegner Fellowship with Yvor Winters. His poems and verse-translations have been widely published; in prose, he has written critical studies and one tale of medieval fantasy (The Year of Wonders). He is married to Mary Anne McPherson, with children and grandchildren.
