MANECKE is a cardiothoracic anesthesiologist and since 2008 has served as chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at UCSD. He is credited with helping to elevate the department to be a global leader in basic and clinical research, education and training, and patient care. It now has one of the best funded research programs in the United States as well as one of the most sought after residency training programs. He continues to be active clinically, teach, and conduct research in clinical cardiovascular physiology and is a busy international speaker. DR. BENUMOF is a world-renowned expert on pulmonary physiology, anesthesia for thoracic surgery, airway management, and obstructive sleep apnea. In recognition of his teaching, he has received numerous awards, most recently the 2010 Teaching Recognition Award Recipient for Achievement in Education from the International Anesthesia Research Society. Dr. Benumof has been an Invited speaker at more than 300 national and international meetings. In addition to being an honorary fellow of the Faculty of Anaesthetists of Australia, he was elected lifetime honorary member of the Society for Airway Management.
