All the characters in the book are fictitious but the setting is real enough. The author knows the area well having lived in the United Arab Emirates for ten years. It is an ideal place for clandestine activities to take place as it is remote and largely inhospitable. The idea of a gay hero is new and even a 'camp queen' can have heroic traits.
