It is widely believed to be an adaptation of a lost play by William Shakespeare and John Fletcher called “Cardenio”. Theobald also maintains that this version was based on manuscripts of another unnamed play written by Shakespeare. Lewis Theobald (1688 - 1744) wasa British textual editor and author - as well as a landmark figure both in the history of Shakespearean editing and in literary satire.
