FIVE WEEKS IN A BALLOON was Jules Verne's first published book; its success made him popular virtually overnight.The book follows the adventures of Dr. Samuel Ferguson, his servant Joe and Dick Kennedy, as they set out to travel across the African continent, the interior of which is still not explored. They hope to accomplish their journey in a hydrogen-filled hot-air balloon. Ferguson has invented a mechanism which generates hydrogen from water efficiently, allowing the travelers to cross vast distances without landing.
