Gregor Samarow is the pseudonym of Johann Ferdinand Martin Oskar von Meding , born on April 11 , 1829in Königsberg and died on July 11 , 1903in Charlottenburg , who is a feuilletonnist writer (often under the pen name of Paul von Weiler ), author of historical novels (especially on the reign of Elizabeth I of Russia ) and German memorialist , author of popular adventure novels. He also writes historical works under the pseudonyms of Detlev von Geyern , Leo Warren , Kurt von Walfeld.Meding is the only son of a senior official of the East Prussian administration . He studied first at home, then attended gymnasium in Köslin and Marienwerder . He studied Public Law in Königsberg, Heidelberg and Berlin and then worked for the regional governments of Liegnitz , Potsdam and Düsseldorf . He left the Prussian civil service in 1859, to enter the service of King George V of Hanover who appreciates him and becomes an adviser to the government. He follows him in exile in ViennaThen it is sent by the king in unofficial special mission to Paris in 1867-1869 who wanted to establish a Foreign Legion battalion, the Guelph legion 1 with Hanoverian command against the Prussia . Meding lives on a big foot in Paris and frequents anti-Prussian circles. Causing the wrath of Bismarck , Meding was finally called to Berlin in 1873. He bought a house in Woihldenberg, near Hildesheim , where he lived until 1896. His fortune wasted, he devoted himself to writing, as of soap operas for family magazine Über Land und Meer , founded by Friedrich Hackländerbut he has to sell his house and retires to Charlottenburg , where he dies in 1903.
