The translation of the dramatic text is one of the areas of study, within the area of Translation Studies, which has been given less attention, despite the immensity of translations carried out within the universe of theater, as well as the number of individuals that this form of communication, theater, especially that for the masses, covers. Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen, published for the first time in 1890, is currently one of the most represented plays on stage ever, also counting on numerous translations for a wide range of languages, written adaptations for theater, television and cinema. The corpus used is a translation of this play, by Freire de Andrade, published by Editorial Presença in 1968. It is an indirect translation made from a version of Una Ellis-Fermor, published by Penguin Classics in 1950. It is the first registered in Portugal and has remained the only translation for forty years. The main objective of this dissertation is to analyze this translation by Freire de Andrade, with the main purpose of establishing aspects of the translation that compromise the source text and consequently also the original text and possible adaptations for theater.
