Throughout Asia, elephants and their forest habitats are rapidly disappearing. But the majestic Asian elephant continues to thrive in the small country of Myanmar. There, thousands of elephants work with humans using environmentally sensitive foresting methods to harvest teak and other valuable woods. This unique working relationship may be key in preserving Asian elephants and their forest homes.
Roland Smith and Michael J. Schmidt traveled to the timber camps of Myanmar to research and photograph this powerful portrait of environmental harmony. Focusing on one elephant's life story, they provide rare insight into the training and care of timber elephants, the invaluable jobs these animals do, and the lives of the people who work with them.
