First published in 1927, as the revised edition of a 1923 original, this book was created in response to a 1921 report from the Departmental Committee of the Board of Education. The report criticised the lack of importance given to the teaching of English in schools. Following the publication of the report, the Incorporated Association of Assistant Masters in Secondary Schools set up another committee charged with the creation of this memorandum. Based on the personal experience of secondary school teachers, the text was written in an effort to systematise methods of teaching English and increase the prominence of the subject in schools. Appendices are included. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the development of English teaching and the history of education. Less
