Music of the Baroque, Third Edition, and its accompanying anthology of scores offer a vivid introduction to European music from 1600 through 1750. Integrating historical and cultural context with composer biography, music analysis, and performance practice, the text surveys Baroque music while analyzing in depth more than thirty works from the principal traditions of the period. It also places special emphasis on the evolution of instruments and performance practices, showing how the period shaped them into what we know today. Organized by chronology and genre, the third edition expands the discussion of social and cultural issues through new sidebars on women in music, gender and the castrato voice, the relationship of music to ethnicity and colonialism, and other key areas of study.
