The practice of maintaining cleanliness of one''s mouth and keeping it germ-free is called oral hygiene. Dental and gum diseases which affect oral hygiene include dental caries, gingivitis and periodontitis. The common and effective methods to maintain oral hygiene and to prevent oral diseases include routine tooth brushing, flossing and the use of tongue scrapers. Regular brushing plays an important role in the reduction of dental plaque. This can be done using a brush with soft bristles as it causes little damage to the gums. Flossing is a technique used to remove plaque from the space between the teeth. Tongue scrapers are used to remove the debris built up on the tongue.
