At the time of the Etruscans on this coast were rich cities, powerful for their culture, from Volterra to Cere and up to Vejo in the Roman countryside. We pass in front of the old Cecina, a place that is still today with the same name, near the coast. More to the south was the famous Vetulonia, then Populonium, one of the most powerful Etruscan cities, which extended its lordship over all the neighboring islands. It was destroyed in the civil war between Mario and Silla, so that already, at the time of Strabo, there was nothing left of its greatness except an old tower, a temple and a few remains of walls. Its ruins are visible on the promontory of the small peninsula that protrudes from the coast, a place made wild by thorn bushes and heather. A small fortress stands in this place. Less
