Narrator Kate Hood’s enticing Australian accent sets the stage for this story about a second chance for aging Australian celebrity Randy Storm. While Hood captures the diversity of the international characters who interact with Storm during his childhood and subsequent rise to fame while living in Papua New Guinea, Hood’s rendition of an American accent is exaggerated. Further, she portrays most of the American women with a high-pitched nasal or whiny quality that is extreme even for the characters of an estranged wife and a bitter teenage daughter. However, Hood’s steady and mostly soulful voice balances these weaknesses and establishes an alluring listening experience. M.F. © AudioFile 2013, Portland, Maine Less
