SCOUT PLATOON ATP 3-20.98 December 2019ATP 3-20.98 provides framework and tactical employment principles and techniques for scout platoons of the Cavalry troops in the Armored brigade combat team; the Infantry brigade combat team, mounted and dismounted; the Stryker brigade combat team. ATP 3-20.98 also applies to the scout platoons of the combined arms battalion, the Infantry battalion, and the Stryker Infantry battalion. The principal audiences for ATP 3-20.98 are platoon leaders, platoon sergeants, section sergeants, and squad leaders. It also applies to Cavalry troop and squadron commanders and staff and maneuver battalion commanders and staff responsible for the planning, execution, or support of reconnaissance and security operations as well as instructors charged with teaching reconnaissance and security operations. Commanders, staffs, and subordinates ensure that their decisions and actions comply with applicable U.S., international, and in some cases host-nation laws and regulations. Commanders at all levels ensure that their Soldiers operate in accordance with the law of war and the rules of engagement. (See FM 6-27.) ATP 3-20.98 uses joint terms where applicable. Selected joint and Army terms and definitions appear in both the glossary and the text. For definitions shown in the text, the term is italicized and the number of the proponent publication follows the definition. This publication is not the proponent for any Army terms. ATP 3-20.98 applies to the Active Army, the Army National Guard/Army National Guard of the United States and the United States Army Reserve unless otherwise stated. The proponent agency is the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command. The preparing agency is the United States Army Maneuver Center of Excellence.
