This field guide to the Vitra Schaudepot illuminates different aspects of the Herzog & de Meuron–designed building, which opened in 2016 and showcases more than 400 key pieces from the Vitra Design Museum''s collection of around 20,000 items as well as the archives and estates of designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, Verner Panton and Alexander Girard.

Objects shown here include early bentwood furniture, icons of classical modernism by Le Corbusier, Alvar Aalto and Gerrit Rietveld, along with colorful plastic objects from the Pop era and recent designs produced with a 3D printer. Short essays embed the objects within the context of the history of design and illuminate the curatorial process behind the selection of the objects and working with the collection itself.
