Carlson originally called his invention electrophotography. It was later renamed xerography-from the Greek roots ξηρός xeros "dry" and -γραφία -graphia "writing"-to emphasize that, unlike reproduction techniques then in use such as cyanotype, this process used no liquid chemicals.
