Trapped at the Baghdad International Airport by American forces in April 2003, Iraqi Republican Guard 1st Lieutenant Firas Al Ebadi made the life-changing decision to surrender to the U.S. Army. This choice, made for the good of his men and to save his own life, eventually led him to become an Iraqi interpreter proudly serving alongside American soldiers as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Despite the challenges of being viewed as a traitor and infidel in the eyes of his own people-and being viewed as nothing more than a Middle Eastern Muslim in the eyes of some Americans-Firas eventually immigrated to the United States of America and became a U.S. citizen.
