‘The Tourists’A short story [2002]By Greg HoeyIt was 1987 and myself and my fellow a rather dissolute if not a little sleazy but friendly enough travelling Englishman who I have decided to team-up with for the duration of our fairly demanding passage through the circuitous tropical and ethnic variability that is common place throughout the Indonesian Archipelagos and especially so the lovely Island of Flores. After an eighteen hour, filled to the brim, mini-bus trip barely traversing a mere 80 miles, that rattled and squeaked dangerously close to the edges of crazily daring drops down into deep valleys a thousand feet below at least, we were dropped off in some dusty wayward town called ‘Mone’ or something similar whatever it was called it had a lot of dollars in its spelling...
