The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit (commonly known as Martin Chuzzlewit) is a novel by Charles Dickens, considered the last of his picaresque novels. It was originally serialized between 1842 and 1844. While he was writing it Dickens told a friend that he thought it was his best work, but it was one of his least popular novels. The main theme of the novel, according to Dickens' preface, is selfishness, portrayed in a satirical fashion using all the members of the Chuzzlewit family. The novel is also notable for two of Dickens' great villains, Seth Pecksniff and Jonas Chuzzlewit. It is dedicated to Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts, a friend of Dickens. The novel was adapted for screen in the 1994 TV serial of the same name produced by the BBC, with a screenplay by David Lodge and directed by Pedr James. The music was composed by Geoffrey Burgon. The serial starred Paul Scofield, Ben Walden, John Mills, Tom Wilkinson, Pete Postlethwaite, Philip Franks, Joan Sims, Nicholas Smith, Sam Kelly, Elizabeth Spriggs, and Julia Sawalha. BBC2 originally broadcasted the 1st episode for 85 minutes and the final 5 episodes for 60 minutes each from 7 November to 12 December 1994. Less
