I will carve a slice of flesh from his body every day until he dies."The chilling prediction by Te Kooti of what lies in store for Ed Bailey, the man most responsible for his imprisonment on the Chatham Islands. this is an adventure story of early colonial New Zealand. Towards the end of the Maori wars the prophet and guerrilla fighterTe Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki emerged. Imprisoned without trial on the Chatham Islands, he escaped back to the mainland, and together with a fighting force he declared war on the British. He unleashed a reign of terror during which he actually slaughtered more Maori than Whites. Along with British soldiers and their Maori supporters he also butchered many innocent settlers. This included men, women, children, and infants and he quickly became feared and hated throughout every region he plundered. For four years he eluded capture even though a large reward was posted for his capture. With a few exceptions Rangi's War is based on the life and exploits of Te Kooti, a very intelligent yet complex character who soon established himself as one of the greatest warriors in New Zealand history.
