This is a rather dark novel, but impossible to put down once you are into it. A tale of a headstrong young man and a lovely widowed noblewoman with a child is gripping and disturbing. The portrait of the little boy and his dawning knowledge that he is to be displaced by the young man was so moving that I could barely read it.
