One of the most beautiful collections of German literature is the »Novellenschatz«, published by Paul Heyse in association with Hermann Kurz in the years 1871 to 1876. The collection was so well received that the Deutsches Novellenschatz, although comprising twenty-four volumes, was followed in 1884 and 1885 by the Neue Deutsche Novellenschatz with twelve volumes, edited by Paul Heyse and Ludwig Laistner. Both collections had the purpose of selecting the best from the abundance of good short stories that German literature had to offer and offering them in cheap volumes to a wider readership.
Two decades have passed since the last collection was published, and German literature has continued to develop powerfully during this period [7] . No wonder, therefore, that many feel the need today to immerse themselves in a similar series of books which would have to unite the best short stories of the last twenty years. The German Poet Memorial Foundation wants to try to publish such a collection in the hope of getting closer to the goal it has set itself: to set a memorial in the heart of the German people for our poets by spreading their works.
Incidentally, strict limitation to appearances of the last twenty years is not their intention. Even novels from previous years commemorate including them in the collection, if they seem worthy of it.
