'Chivalry' is an early work by Cabell, a slender collection of short tales, that are officially part of the Don Manuel cycle but really have little to do with it, being at least partially inspired by actual historical events. They are somewhat more conventional than his later works, certainly less witty, definitely less 'naughty, ' yet sharing a similar world view. The Prince Edward of the second story here is very much the prototype of Don Manuel in 'Figures of the Earth.' Indeed, most of the 'types' that populate Cabell's novels are to be found, but clothed in a more courtly style, as they pass through a somewhat tongue in cheek pastiche of Medieval romances. Less
