I do not know how long, sir, I thus remained unconscious of pain on the steps of the little chapel, in the middle of the bridge, in front of the grilled niche of the Madonna. When I came to myself I always found myself lying in the dust of the road, on the edge of the bridge; but a pretty contadine, in a festive dress, leaned her graceful face on mine, gave me air to my forehead with her fan of green paper all glittered with gold, and made me breathe, for lack of scented water , her large bouquet of silt flowers which she held in her hand like a country bride; she was so beautiful in face, dress, lace and ribbons, sir, that when I opened my eyes I thought it was a miracle, that the living Madonna had come down from her niche or from her paradise to assist me , and I made the sign of the cross, as before the Blessed Sacrament, when the priest lifts him up to mass and makes him adore the Christians of the mountain in the middle of a cloud of incense, Less
