Three best friends, thirty-two cats, one amazing mystery—I just hope I don’t cause too much trouble before 9th grade.
"Darla Decker has to be one of my favorite young adult protagonists. In this volume as in each of its precedents, Darla faces the challenges of adolescence and growing up, and finds that every passing year brings higher stakes. This book includes Darla's investigation of her biggest mystery yet- but tucked under the surface story of the link between the eccentric Mrs. Marchio and Reggie Faraday's grandmother are the deeper mysteries Darla faces: how to face her upcoming transition to high school, how to navigate her parents' ever-rockier relationship, and how to cope with learning that adults can make mistakes too." ~ Avid Eye
Dear Diary,
You won’t believe this. After all these years with Mrs. Marchio’s crazy numbered cats running around Shiloh Farms, we finally found #1, but not in Shiloh Farms! The secrets between Reggie’s grandmother and the demon-bus-driver are blowing my mind, but please don’t tell Reggie I’m still thinking about it, diarybud. She and Nate really want to focus on our first training as counselors at Camp Wakonda, and enjoy our last summer before high school without any drama.
I want that too, but with Mom and Dad barely speaking, and Brian doing all he can to avoid being at home, I can’t help wanting to disappear into this Marchio Mystery for a while. I just hope I don’t cause too much trouble for my best friends. I feel like I’ll need them more than ever in the ninth grade.
Thanks Diaryfriend,
Darla Decker
A frank and funny look at the path to adulthood, "Darla Decker Breaks the Case" continues a journey of love, loss, and the nitty-gritty of growing up through Darla Decker’s eyes.
"Different books are going to bring different things to the table and for me this makes me feel younger again. I'm totally removed from the generation Darla is a part of. Junior High for me was about Oregon Trail, Gameboy and the first Gulf War. Still, the spirit of the Darla Decker Diaries is universal. That growing up is amazing and awful. Beautiful and heart-wrenching at every turn. It's something that is frightening for all of us but we also all have it within ourselves to get through it. With a little help from our friends." ~ C. Clark, Author
