In 1968 the United States was deeply involved in the Viet Nam war, and was also on the verge of becoming involved in a second theater war with North Korea. With the capture of the USS Pueblo, and the dramatic increase in border combat, a military build-up had begun. I was part of that escalation, and my one year in South Korea is the basis for One Year There.This novel was created in a free verse poetry format, with the chapters telling of the various soldiers and civilians living in and around Camp Colbern, a small nuclear missile base in South Korea. This camp was high on the hit list of North Korean infiltrators, and my story tells how this constant threat affected the soldiers stationed there.The character names have been changed from the actual names of the people I knew during my year in Korea, yet all of the memories told in One Year There did happen and are based on real experiences. The chapters and storyline is presented so as to give the reader a true feeling of what that year was like.
