Bird monitoring is one of the most widespread types of long-term monitoring in the United States. Birds are considered an indicator of ecosystem integrity because of their high body temperature, rapid metabolism, and high ecological position in most food webs. They are also useful indictors of habitat quality and quantity, as evidenced by numerous studies world-wide (e.g., Jansen and Robertson 2001).
