Pencillings is a collection of little essays on life and literature. They deal, some with the fundamental problems of literature-the relation of literature to life and its significance for living, the old problem of art and morality, and the mystery of literary creation ; others, more personal and less philosophical, are concerned with the byways of literary criticism, with styles and men and idiosyncrasies. In the more familiar manner permitted by the short essay the book is a restatement and a development of the critical principles and preferences already expounded by the author in Aspects of Literature, Countries of the Mind, and The Problem of Style.
