From My Early Days in Scotland Till the Present Day in Adelaide. First published in 1906. Mrs Allen, whose mother had died when she was six, went into service aged ten. After taking a variety of positions in her native Scotland she decided to emigrate to Australia after attending a lecture on the colonies, and there found employment at Government House in Adelaide amongst other situations. She tells of her ill-fated marriage, and gives an invaluable insight into the life of a working woman in the colonies in the second half of the 19th century. Less
