It is regrettable that this work is unsuitable for younger readers - laden as it is with erotic episodes, frankly told - because it is far more than the inventory of conquests which has made it most famous. Casanova was first known for having escaped from a notorious Ventian prison and he managed through a long and colorful life to meet many a famous figure and to frequent many a glittering circle. Casanova traveled a great deal - not always willingly - and his memoirs give a rich and varied portrait of Paris, Venice, London, Moscow and other European locales, providing glimpses of Voltaire, Mozart and Goethe along the way.
