The War in South Africa: Its Cause and Conduct is an essay written by Arthur Conan Doyle first published by George Newnes Ltd. on 16 January 1902. Doyle does not pretend that the right was absolutely on one side, nor that the British campaign has been above criticism. His contention is that the British Government did its best to avoid war and that the British army did its best to wage it with humanity. He considers the various charges brought against the British soldiers, the management of the concentration camps, and the cases of farm-burning, and his conclusions amount, on the whole, to a vindication of the British army.
